Services Saturday for H. Whitney

Funeral services for Hugh C. Whitney, 85, of Birmingham, who died Wednesday at the Jefferson County Hospital, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Burch Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham with the Rev. Phil Campbell officiating.

Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham. The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the Free Methodist Church of Birmingham.

Whitney was born Jan. 21, 1902 in Bladensburg, the son of Hubert and Clara Bailey Whitney. He grew up in Bladensburg and lived his adult life in Van Buren County.

Whitney was a farmer, worked at the Ordinance Plant in Burlington during the 1940s and was employed at the Dexter Company in Fairfield until his retirement in 1970. He was a member of the Birmingham Free Methodist Church.

He married Catherine Bartholomew on Sept. 24, 1925 at the Methodist Parsonage in Bloomfield. She survives.

Also surviving are four daughters; Barbara Muntz of Wichita, Kan.; Joyce Stokes of Birmingham; Doris Bristo and Donna Godwin, both of Sacramento, Calif.; one son, Howard, of Whitefish, Mont.; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Carol Halfety of Long Beach, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters.
