June 30, about 5 o'clock in the afternoon, Mrs. James H. McSurely, a highly respected lady, aged 45 years and eight days, died at her home between Keosauqua and Mt. Zion. The news of her demise came as a shock to her acquaintances at Keosauqua and in her neighborhood, as it was not known she had been sick. And indeed she had not been until Thursday last, when a rupture on the side of the lower bowels that occurred a number of years ago, suddenly began to pain her and soon developed into an inflammation that in spite of all that medical attention could do, caused her death two days later. Maggie Trebilock was her maiden name, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. John Trebilcock who reside about a quarter of a mile from the home where their daughter died. Twenty-six years ago she was married to her husband who survives. To Mr. and Mrs. McSurely was born one child, a daughter, who is left to comfort the father. Her age is 14. The deceased was a lady loved and respected by all her acquaintances and her death is sincerely mourned in this community. The funeral services were held at the residence, Rev. P.A. Johnson, Congregational minister at Ottumwa, preaching the sermon. The services at the grave were by the order of P.E.O. of which she was a member. The burial was in the Purdom cemetery.
