Pettit.

John B. Pettit passed quietly to the beyond at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 29. The old gentleman had been in poor health for several years, and during the past four or five months, in fact ever since decline in his condition was noted. The cause of death was a paralytic stroke. Mr. Pettit was a native of Ohio and would have reached the seventy-first milestone on his journey through life September 23 of the present year. He followed the callilng of a millwright in the days of his youth until the roller mill began supplanting the old burrs. In 1873 Mr. Pettit came to Burlington. Soon thereafter he established the box factory and the laundry which are now being operated by the firm of J.B. Pettit and sons. He also embarked in various other enterprises. Mr. Pettit was a man of untiring industry, and full of energy and ambition. He was as honest as the day is long, a good citizen, modest, retring, but one of the men who are satisfied to build up a community while others represent it.

Mr. Pettit was married in Zanesville, Ohio, to Miss Debory Steele, who became to him a helpmate in every sense of the word. She passed away some five months ago, and it was apparent at the time that the separation would not be for long. Of this union seven children survive as follows: Mrs. Jas. Foley, Mrs. Wright Clark, Mrs. Winfield Smith, Mr. Alfred Pettit, Mrs. J.B. Long, Mrs. George Brown, Mr. John Pettit Jr. Of these all but Mrs. Foley who lives in Denver, are residents of this city. Mr. Pettit was not formally connected with any church, nor was he a member of any society, except the Bankers' Life Association.
