John Agnew Jr. Found Dead; Body in Ditch

John James Agnew Jr., 40, was found dead Sunday morning, Dec. 31 at about 3 a. m. in a roadside pool of water southeast of Keosauqua.
Dr. J. O. Ewing of Bonaparte, Van Buren County medical examiner, said death was due to drowning. Apparently he had fallen from his car, which had come to a stop hanging over the end of the culvert. The car was not badly damaged. Sheriff Orville Lee said the cause of the accident is uncertain.
Ewing said Agnew had been dead about three hours when Leo Alexander, a passer-by, discovered the body. The man had fallen through ice which covered the pool.
The accident occurred on a county road a mile southeast of the Midway Cafe which is on highway 2 southeast of Keosauqua. Agnew is believed to have been driving to his home nearby. He had made his home with his mother, Mrs. Lillian Thomas. His father, John J. Agnew, Sr., lives in the same community.
Agnew was born April 10, 1921, in Burlington. He was a veteran of World War II and was unmarried.
The service was held Tuesday at 2 p. m. at the Burnett-Catcott Funeral Home. Burial was in Thompson Cemetery near Bonaparte.
