Ruth E. Countryman

Ruth E. Countryman, 66, of Birmingham died at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at the Van Buren County Hospital emergency room in Keosauqua.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham with the Rev. Charles McCracken officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to the Birmingham First Responders, the Birmingham Public Library or the Diabetes Foundation.

Mrs. Countryman was born June 21, 1936, in Fairfield, the daughter of William James and Beulah Bernice Bruey Tonkinson. She married Merrell Stanley Countryman Nov. 15, 1955, in Memphis, Mo. He died Aug 14, 1982.

She lived most of her life in the Birmingham community. She attended Birmingham schools. A homemaker, she worked at Fairfield Glove Factory and was a substitute mail carrier.

Survivors include six sons, Steve Countryman and wife Chris of Libertyville, Charles Countryman of Birmingham, Richard Countryman and wife Kathy of Birmingham, William Roy Countryman of Mountain Home, Ark., Douglas E. Countryman and wife Kathy of Fairfield, and Dennis Countryman and wife Diane of Birmingham; 15 grandchildren; long-time companion Clifford Brown of Birmingham; five sisters, Melva Lee Peck of Bloomfield, Kathryn Disney of Sarasota, Fla., Vivian Bickett of Muscatine, Wilma Jean Hootman of Fairfield and Lola Kirchner of Stockport.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gary Lee Countryman; one grandson; one brother, Robert Tonkinson; one sister, Mary Garrison; and her parents.
