Donald D. Walton, 85, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 1:25 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Van Buren Good Samaritan Center, Keosauqua, Iowa.
Born September 1, 1927 in Brighton, Iowa the son of Otto and Mary (Fetters) Walton. On June 14, 1959 he married Karen Homolar in Elberon, Iowa .
Survivors include his wife Karen of Farmington, Iowa, two sons Greg (Kathy) Walton of Granger, Iowa and Charles (Nicole) Walton of Altoona, Iowa, one daughter Marla (Mike) Hansen of Quiedersbach, Germany, mother-in-law Emma Homolar of Tama, Iowa, seven grandchildren Gwendolyn, Annabella, Austin, Dakota, Zach, Reno and Tiffani, two sisters-in-law Janice Pooley and Kathleen Gingerich and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son David Jon, one granddaughter Rachel Emmabeth and one sister Wilma Owens.
Donald was a member of the Farmington United Methodist Church where he previously served on various committees, the church board and taught an adult Sunday school class for several years. He attended rural schools, Richland High School, received his BA at Central College in Pella and his MA at the University of Iowa. He taught in the Cotter, Brighton and Kingsley school systems before coming to Farmington where he was High School Principal and then Principal and Superintendent in the Harmony School System. He served in the U.S. Army stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington. Don and his wife Karen and their children owned and operated The Emporium in Farmington for several years. Don enjoyed participating in, and watching, all kinds of sports during his lifetime and attended all of his children's sports events, never missing one of their games and attending as many of their other activities as possible and many of his grandchildren's activities. Golf was his favorite individual sport and he enjoyed playing with his son David when he lived in this area, and several friends at Green Acres. He also enjoyed travel, going on bus trips with travel groups, being a part of the Branson Bunch for several years, attending musical productions and plays and especially getting together with family and friends.
Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington, Iowa. Where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that evening.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 29, 2013 at Farmington United Methodist Church with Pastor Goldie Laymon officiating.
Burial will be at the Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington with Full Military Rites presented by the Farmington American Legion Post #231.
Memorials may be made in his memory to the Farmington United Methodist Church or the Farmington EMTs.
Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington is assisting the family with arrangements.
