August 22, 1815, and Died at
Keosauqua, Iowa, April 7, '02

OBITUARY SKETCH

About 87 years ago near the close of the war of 1812 Maria Derby was born at Huntington, Vermont. Her parents in 1830 removed to Jefferson county, New York, where she was married in 1835 to Eleazer Smith. In 1854 they removed to Illinois where Mr. Smith died in 1886, Mrs. Smith coming to Keosauqua in 1893.

She was the mother of ten children, seven of whom are living. Three of the children, viz. Geo. F. Smith, Mrs. W. E. Davis, and Miss Emma A. Smith live at Keosauqua.

On Monday, April 7, 1902, she had a stroke of apoplexy and died thirty minutes afterward. The funeral services were held from the late home at 2 P. M. Wednesday, Rev. C. E. Perkins officiating. She was a member of the M. E. church but for several years had attended the Congregational church as regularly as her health would permit. The interment was in the Purdom cemetery at Keosauqua.
