Charles Chapin Smith, who married a Bonaparte girl and was a resident of Bonaparte for many years, died in Chicago at the home of his daughter, May 2, 1902, and the body was brought here for interment.
Mr. Smith was born in Warrington, Virginia, August 31, 1830, but came to Van Buren Co., Iowa, in his early youth and spent the greater part of his life in the same community. He learned the tinners trade in Farmington with Mr. Roth. In 1864 removed to Bonaparte and on January 22nd of the following year was married to Miss Maria Louise Cresap. To them were born two daughters and one son, one daughter dying in infancy. For many years he was identified with the Masonic fraternity, having joined Bonaparte Lodge No. 73 in May 1865 and was one of the charter members of LaFayette Chapter No. 61 organized in 1870. At the time of his death he was at the home of his daughter in Chicago where he had resided for the past two and a half years. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, and daughter, Jennie, of Chicago, and son, Marshall, of Bonaparte. Also two brothers and one sister in Athens, Mo., and two sisters in California.
Mr. Smith had lived 71 years, 8 months and one day. The funeral services were held Sunday at 3 P. M. from the home of Marshall Smith in Bonaparte, Rev. Duty officiating at the home and the Masons having charge of the services at the cemetery. He was an affectionate husband, a loving parent, and a genial neighbor. All who knew him loved him, for he made friends wherever he lived.
