Obituary of Mrs. Rachel Workman

Rachel Jane Harper was born at Millersburg, Holmes county, Ohio, June 22, 1846, and died Aug. 26, 1921, aged 76 years, 2 months and 3 days. When about 16 years of age she came with her parents to Iowa. With the exception of about two and one half years spent in California, she has lived in the same neighborhood to which she moved when coming from Ohio. In 1872, near Winchester, in Van Buren county, Iowa, she was married to Oliver P. Workman, who departed this life on May 29, 1877. To this union three children were born: Eugene, Richard and Mary, who were with her in her last sickness. After the death of Mr. Workman she returned to Iowa to the home of her father-in-law, Richard Workman, where she remained until his death in 1903. Since that time she has made her home with her son, Richard Workman, at Stockport. The 31st day of July she came to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Fleming in Fairfield, to make them a visit and was taken sick with her last illness, about a week later, from which she never rallied. She united with the Christian church at Stockport, Iowa, Dec. 9, 1909, and lived a faithful christian life since that date. Besides the three children herein named, she is survived by eight grandchildren, Mrs. Beryl Beck, Eugene, Fern and Irene Fleming; Lloyd, Lester, Dale and R. A. Workman, also one great-grandchild, Bettie E. Beck. Burial was in the Fairfield cemetery, Eld. Putnam of the Stockport and Big Cedar Christian churches, in charge of the services.
