Obituary of Harold E. Standley

Herold[sic] Elmer Standley, son of Will and Mabel Standley, was born March 15, 1908, near Salem, Iowa, and departed this life, June 15, 1925, at the age of 17 years and 3 months.

He was converted during the revival services at the Methodist church at Stockport, December 19, 1923, and united with the church at that time. He has been a faithful member and was secretary of the Sunday school and a regular attendant thereof.

He had just finished his Junior year in Stockport high school and was dearly loved by his classmates.

While at the creek bathing with other boys, the stream being to swift for him, his body was taken beneath the current and his life was gone.

He leaves to mourn their loss a mother, four brothers and one sister, his father having preceded him in death about 18 months. He will be sadly missed in his home, in church and in the school, and by all who knew him.

Harold Standley’s Body Found
(From our Stockport Correspondent)

Memorial services were held for Harold Standley in the M. E. church Sunday morning. At the time of his demise Harold was secretary of the Sunday school, and a member of J. C. Silvers’ class. His classmates proved their loyalty by the way they patrolled the stream through the days and nights of storm and calm, in the hope of effecting the recovery of his body. All other services in town were dismissed.

As telephoned to the Republican, last week, Harold and two boyhood companions ventured into the raging waters of the Big Cedar on Monday late in the afternoon. Just what happened will never be known. His cries for help from mid stream caused his companions to hasten with all speed for him, but before being reached he disappeared.

The body was found Friday at 2 p.m. near the mouth of the Big Cedar in a drift above the water line at the time of discovery.

Funeral services were held at 7:30 p.m., Friday in the Spencer cemetery, and the body was laid beside his father.

Mrs. Standley and the remaining brothers and sisters have the sympathy of the entire community.
