Death of a Resident's Father.
Mr. S. M. Walther, (father of Mrs. Robt. Cresap) a citizen of Nauvoo for more than half a century, died last Saturday night at ten o'clock at his home in that city of hemorrage of the brain.
Deceased was born in Kulmbach, Bavaria, Germany, February 16, 1821, and at the time of his death was 80 years, 3 months and 9 days old. He came to America in 1837 and settled in Louisville, Ky. He engaged in the confectionery business and later in hardware and tinware. Shortly after, he moved to Missouri and engaged in farming. He moved to Nauvoo in 1849 and started a hardware store in the frame building opposite Mrs. Wetzel's home in the first ward. Later he moved on the hill, where he started a hardware store, and about 14 years ago disposed of his business to his son, Milt. He was elected alderman of the first ward for several terms, and held the office of city treasurer for four years. He was a prominent Mason when that order was in a flourishing condition in Nauvoo, and was a staunch Democrat. He was married three times, and to his last wife, Miss Francis Leach, in Nauvoo, April 30, 1857? To this union were born eight children, four boys and four girls: Mrs. Nancy Cresap, of Bonaparte, Ia.; M. S. Walther, of Bowling Green, Mo.; George, of Reeves, Wis.; Mrs. Rosa Bidamon, Edward, Fred, Mrs. Marian Morril and Mrs. Carrie Rahn, of Nauvoo. Charles L. Walther, a son, by his first wife, resides at Reeves, Wis. He also leaves besides his wife, a brother, Charles F. Walther, of St. Louis, and 21 grandchildren.
Deceased has been in poor health for years, being afflicted with rheumatism in the worst form. He had often expressed the willingness to meet the dread destroyer. He leaves a large circle of friends who sincerely mourn his departure. The bickerings of life, the little jealousies and the small quarrels found no room for lodgment in his mind. The funeral was held from the residence yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. Boor, of the German Lutheran church, officiating. -- Nauvoo Register
The RECORD, along with a very large circle of friends, deeply sympathizes with Mrs. Cresap and the family in their loss.
