Jack D. Shannan

Jack D. Shannan, 77, of Keosauqua died at 10:20 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2001, in Ottumwa.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Bill Shewmaker officiating. Burial will be in Fellows Cemetery in Keosauqua, with military rites by Beer-Barker Post.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present from 7-8 p.m. Memorials to State Line Motorcycle Rally or the World War II monument in Washington, D.C. may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 25113 Route W-46, Farmington 52626.

Mr. Shannan was born April 24, 1924, in Clark County, Mo., south of Mount Sterling, the son of Paul P. and Gladys Hornbaker Shannan. He married Arline Carruthers may 15, 1943, in Memphis, Mo. She died July 21, 1996.

He was a heavy equipment operator for Burlington-Northern Railroad, farmed in Van Buren County and had operated a service station in Keosauqua. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II including the Battle of the Bulge.

He was member of Beer-Barker Post No. 113 American Legion in Keosauqua, restored and rode Indian and Harley Davidson motorcycles, was a member of Balckhawk Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle Association of America, ABATE of Iowa, an honorary officer and life-time member of Stateline Rally Association and was a hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his mother, Gladys Shannan of Keosauqua; one son, Skip Shannan of Memphis, Mo.; four daughters, Rita Hughes of Keosauqua, Kitty Meek of Mount Pleasant, Ann Skaggs of Birmingham and Jenny Smith of Farmington; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leila Clark of El Paso, Texas.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his father.
