This Was His Natal Place.
Joseph A. Sherman, oldest son of J. W. and Jennie (Brooker) Sherman, died at Hutchinson, Kansas, at the home of his uncle, W. H. Brooker, May 3rd. In company with his mother he was en route to Colorado, but became too weak, and, stopping at Hutchinson, he died of swift consumption after a four week's struggle.
A number of years ago his father published the Bonaparte Journal in the present quarters of the RECORD, and Joe was born March 10, 1875, in the house in which the RECORD now lives. He enlisted in the 51st Iowa Infantry, in June '98 and went to the Philippines, serving there till November '99. The malarial poison he absorbed in the islands was believed to be the cause of his death. After returning from the army he worked at the printers' trade in Kansas City for about a year. Interment occurred, at his request, at Osceola, to which place his family removed in 1879.
[date not given but position in scrapbook suggests death in 1901]
