DICK.
James Dick was born in county Tyrone, Ireland, May 2, 1835, and died at his home near Big mound, April 25, 1901, aged 65 years, 11 months and 23 days.
At the age of 14 years he came to America with his parents, who took up their residence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He worked three years in that city at the baker's trade. With this exception he has been engaged in farming during his whole life. He remained in Pennsylvania until 1856 when he came to Webster, Illinois living there until 1859, when he purchased a farm in Cedar township Van Buren county, Iowa. He removed from this farm in 1867, having sold it and purchased the present homestead where he died.
He was married Sept. 10, 1861, to Miss Margaret McDonald, of Van Buren county, who, with seven children, five grandchildren, one brother and one sister, survives him.
Mr. Dick was a man of strong and decisive character, firm in his conviction of the right, and believed in a practical Christianity of deeds rather than abstract Christianity. He was always ready and willing to help anyone in distress or for any worthy object.
The funeral occurred from his late home Sunday, April 28th, at eleven o'clock, conducted by Rev. St. Clair, assisted by Rev. Tennett, and interment was made in the Bales cemetery.
The floral pieces were beautiful and numerous. Fully 800 people attended the funeral and 690 individuals, aside from the family, took a farewell look at the face of the man who had been such a loving husband and father and a faithful neighbor and friend.
