OBITUARY OF ROSS CALHOUN.

Ross Calhoun was born August 5, 1842, in Van Buren county, Iowa, on what is known as the Calhoun homestead, southeast of Birmingham, his parents being Newton and Esther Calhoun, well known pioneers of this community.

While a student at the State University of Iowa he enlisted in Co. D, Forty-Fourth Infantry, and served for a period of four months. While in the service he recieved a wound which was regarded as slight and not of much consequence, but which never healed and of late years caused him a good deal of pain and suffering.

On November 15, 1865, he was married to Mary Julian, who died Novmeber 27, 1874. Four children were born to this union, two of whom survive him. In November, 1376(ie:1876), he was married to Alice Farson and three children blessed this union, two of whom survive him.

In the spring of 1875 he went to Western Kansas and laid out thereod the town Ness City, which afterward became the county seat of the great storm, which did so much damage to that city and surrounding country.

When his health failed him in 1910, he returned to his native state with the hope of improving it, but in this he was disappointed. At the time of his death, he was living with his daughter, Mrs. Esther Morrow in Kansas City, Mo. On Chris(t)mas Eve., he was on an errand for the family, and had rone(err) about four blocks from home when he fell to the ground and his life had gone out.

Of his immediate relatives he is survived by J.C. Calhoun of Keosauqua, Iowa; Mrs. Esther Morrow of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Etta Cot___ of East Auburn, Cal.; Dr. C.B. Calhoun of Robinson, Kansas.; also two brothers, Newton of Birmingham, Iowa. and Sands of Lumpoc, Cal.; one sister-Mary June Calhoun of Birmingham, Iowa.

The funeral service was held in the Methodist church in Birmingham, on Thursday afternoon, the 27th at 2:00 o'clock, the service being in charge of Pastor W.J. Fowler, and interment in the Winchester cemetery.
