Obituary of Oscar Ross

Oscar Ross, born of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Ross, was born in Kentucky, November 18, 1836, and died at Letts, Iowa, February 21, 1918, age 81 years, 3 months and 3 days.

He came to Iowa with his parents when a little child and grew to manhood near Grandview, Louisa county. In 1857, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Linsay of Grandview. In this union seven children were born—Mary and Elmira who died in infancy, Myra, Everett, Mildred and Nema, all of whom preceded him in death, and Marcellus of Letts, Iowa, who is the only surviving member of the family.

In 1882 he enlisted as a volunteer in Company F, 19th Iowa Infantry, and served three years, or until the close of the war. In 1883 his dear wife died, and in 1886 he was again united in marriage to Maggie Hubbard of Birmingham. He lived for a few years in Jefferson county and then moved to Birmingham, Van Buren county, where he resided until 1906, when death again robbed him of his companion.

Since then he has made his home with his son Mr. M. C. Ross at Letts, Iowa.

Mr. Letts was a true soldier, a loyal citizen and a sincere christian. He fought his battles, vanquished his foes and died a victor.

Early in life he gave his heart to God. His consistent Christian life won for him the respect and confidence of both young and old. He leaves to mourn his departure, one son Mr. M. C. Ross, one grandson, Oscar M. Ross of Letts, and 3 granddaughters, Ercile, Orpha and Iva, and one son-in-law, T. M. Clark of Hutchison, Kansas.

In compliance with his request the remains were interred beside his second wife in the Birmingham cemetery, Sunday, February 24, 1918. The funeral service was conducted in the M. E. church in Birmingham by his pastor Rev. D. Phillips of Letts and Rev. W. J. Fowler of Birmingham.
