ALVIN WINSLOW

Alvin Winslow, eldest son of Jordan and Sarah Winslow, was born August 17, 1858, near Salem, Iowa, and died April 10, 1936, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Erle Layman, Mt. Sterling, at the age of 77 years, 7 months and 23 days. He moved to Mt. Zion in 1881, where he resided for several years.

He was united in marriage March 10, 1886, with Lucy Workman of Mt. Zion. To this union was born one daughter, Carrie. His wife died December 1, 1889.

Mr. Winslow spent the remainder of his life in Birmingham. The last two years he was at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Erle Layman.

On April 6, 1897, he was married to Lou Walker of Birmingham. One son was born to this union but died in infancy. His wife died November 23, 1908.

He united with the Methodist church in Birmingham in 1910. He was a regular attendant and held several offices so long as health permitted. A loving father and a good neighbor has gone to his reward.

He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Carrie Layman, two grandchildren Billie and Erlene Layman; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Scott of Des Moines, Mrs. Mary Robinson and Lena Hootman of Birmingham, two brothers, Elgar of Packwood and Elmer of Birmingham, and a number of nieces and nephews. Bertha, Emma, Volney and William preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, April 11, at 2 o’clock at the Birmingham M. E. church, conducted by Rev. F. M. James, a former pastor. Appropriate songs were sung by Glenn and Floyd Williams, accompanied by Kathleen Kerr. Interment in the Millers Chapel Cemetery.

Transcribed for genealogical purposes, I am researching this family.
