Mrs. Sheward Dies At Daughter’s Home

Birmingham, Mrs. Margaret Sheward, 97, died Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. D. Hope, in Birmingham.

She was the daughter of Marquis and Jane Shriner and was born in Pennsylvania July 11, 1842. She came overland with her parents to Fairfield when 6 years old, attended the first state fair there and later taught school in Fairfield and Jefferson county.

She was married to C. L. Sheward in Fairfield June 30, 1970 and moved to Birmingham in 1972, where she had resided ever since except for three years in Bloomfield. Her husband died October 27, 1918.

One daughter, nine brothers and sisters preceded her in death. She is survived by one daughter Mr. Hope.

The body is at the home of Mrs. Hope, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in charge of Rev. F. M. James. Burial will be in Maple Hill cemetery at Birmingham.

Passing of Oldest Resident of the County

Mrs. Charles L. Sheward, oldest resident of Van Buren county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. D. Hope, in Birmingham, Iowa, Sunday evening, May 19, at the ripe old age of 97 years, 10 months and 8 days

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock at the late home, with interment in Birmingham cemetery.

Margaret, daughter of Marquis and Jane Shriner, was born July 11, 1842, at Louden, Pennsylvania. At the age of 6 years she came to Fairfield, Iowa, with her parents, and on June 30, 1870, she was united in marriage to Charles L. Sheward.

They moved to Birmingham in 1872, where he became editor of the Enterprise. With the exception of about three years in Bloomfield, Mrs. Sheward has made her home in Birmingham since 1872.

Her husband passed away, Oct. 27, 1918, being survived by his wife and one daughter, Stella Hope. Mr. M. D. Hope, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Sheward, who was associated with Mr. Sheward in the publication of the Enterprise, died May 24, 1938.

After the death of her husband, Mrs. Sheward made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Hope. Her health had been exceptionally good for one of her age, But recently she began to fail until she slipped quietly away last Sunday evening.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters.
