The service for Harold S. Laughlin, 88, who died Tuesday evening at Parkview Care Center will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds with the Rev. Carl Riggs officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery north of Douds. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Cross Lanes Club of First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield may be left at the funeral home.

Laughlin was born Dec. 26, 1896 in Van Buren County, the son of of Hugh and Nola Belle McGill Laughlin. In 1931 he married Katie McCurdy. They farmed near Douds and moved to the Cross Lanes Community near Batavia in 1939. They retired to Fairfield in 1977. She died in 1983.

Surviving are a son, Harold, Jr., Saudi Arabia; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lane, San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren. Four brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

In addition to farming, Laughlin was a published poet, a woodcarver and furniture maker. He had been an elder in the Cross Lanes Church and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Fairfield. A veteran of World War I, he had been active in the WWI Veterans organization.
