Vermil Hootman of Mt. Zion Dies

Last Survivor of 10 Children Succumbs;
Leaves Son and Daughter; Burial at Birmingham

Nelson Vermillion Hootman of Mt. Zion died Saturday after being ill several weeks. He would have been 73 years of age September 15 and was the last survivor of 10 children of Mr. and Mrs. William Hootman.

Mr. Hootman was born near Mt. Zion. From 1887 until 1882[sic] he made his home in the west, the remainder of his life with the exception of one year in Oregon, being spent in Van Buren and Jefferson counties. He was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Patrick in 1892 and to the union was born five children; Mr. Hootman was preceded in death by his wife and three children.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Bonnett, and a son, Clem, both living near Mt. Zion; also five grandsons and 2 great grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.

Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church at Mt. Zion by the Rev. F. M. James of Keosauqua at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Floyd Williams, John Wilson and Merrill Countryman sang at the final rites, with Mrs. Lee Dustin as accompanist.

Burial was at Maple Hill cemetery at Birmingham. The bearers were John McNamar, Ralph Jameson, Ray Whittlesey, Lee Ruggles, Joseph Brannan and Alva Arnold.
