GEORGE KAYS

George Kays was born March 23, 1856, in Sussex county, New Jersey, and passed away at Chicago, January 3, 1929, at the age of 72 years, 9 months and ten days.

He was the fourth child of Martin and Mary Jane Kays, there being a family of five children. Two brothers and one sister having preceded him in death; the only surviving member of the family being a sister, Mrs. Mary Kays Craven, of Milton.

At the age of seven years he moved with the parents to Keosauqua, Iowa, where the family lived for a short time, later moving to Milton, Iowa, in which community he lived most of his life, excepting the past sixteen years which were spent in Chicago.

On September 26, 1882, he was united in marriage with Martha Jane Snodgrass, at Bloomfield, Iowa, and to this union five children were born: Mrs. Sybil Tatman of Grandview, Washington, William B. of Milton, Iowa, Martin S., deceased, and Leland and Raymond, both of Ellensburg, Washington.

He united with the M.E. church at this place during the pastorate of Rev. J.W. Potter, and was also a member of the Masonic order.

During the time that he lived in this community he was very active and had a wide acquaintance.

He was energetic, thorough going, had a very high sense of honor and integrity, and will be remembered kindly by a host of former friends and acquaintances.

The funeral was held from the M.E. church in Milton, Tuesday, January 8th, at 1:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Rayhill. Interment in the Milton cemetery.
