Leslie F. Coon, son of Milton and Maretta Coon, ws born July 27, 1921, at Avant, Okla., and departed this life Saturday, April 10, 1976, at Ottumwa, Ia. at the age of 54.
He grew up at Backus, Minn. and served with the U.S. Marines in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
On June 7, 1945, he married Florence Loeffler at Elko, Nev. They lived in Idaho until his release from service in 1945, when they moved to Keosauqua. They had resided in Ottumwa since 1973.
Lee, as he was known to his friends, was a long distance truck driver until being disabled in an accident in July, 1974. While living in Keosauqua he was employed by the city, the school, and the municipal power company. He was Assistant Chief of the Keosauqua Fire Department for many years, and active in the American Legion.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his widow, a son, Virgle of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Cross of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Mrs. Louann Harness of Ottumwa; a twin brother, Weslie and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Elyea, both of Backus, Minn., other relatives and many friends.
Lee will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, a good citizen and friend.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 1976 at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Harold Schnedler, Congregation pastor, officiating. Beer-Barker Post No. 113, American Legion conducted military honors at the graveside in Fellows Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Keosauqua Public Library.
