Hubert Samuel Roush of Burlington, Iowa, died Saturday, Nov. 22 at Burlington Medical Center after a short illness.
He was born August 19, 1913, the son of Leonard and Hazel Barker Roush at Douds, Iowa. He married Pauline Hanshaw McLain in Keosauqua, Iowa on June 20, 1946. He was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church of Burlington. He was also a member of Celestial Lodge No. 413, AF&AM of Douds, Iowa.
He was a graduate of Douds High School with the class of 1923, and attended Parsons College, Fairfield, Iowa.
Hugh owned the Gamble Store in Burlington for a number of years and worked for 18 years as a representative for the Mutual of Omaha Insurance Co.
He entered the service in 1941 and served four years in the South Pacific Theater with honors. He received the Silver Star for "Gallantry in Action" and was given a battlefield commission.
He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers, and one granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, one son, Wayne of Cedar Rapids, and one daughter, Linda, her husband, John Neill, of Boulder, Colorado, and two grandchildren, Christina and Travis Neill. He is also survived by his mother of Keosauqua, one sister, Helen Strait, of Fairfield, two brothers, Marvin of Douds and Allen, of Stanwood, and six nieces and nephews.
Hugh was a leader in any community in which he lived. He gave abundantly of his time and talents, but his greatest contributions was to his family, on which he showered his love and attention. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
The funeral was held at Lunning Chapel on Monday, Nov. 24, 1980. Rev. Vernon Anderson of West Hill United Methodist Church was in charge of the services. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery at Boulder, Colo.
