Georgia Louise Mitchem, daughter of George Anderson and Niatta S. Clever Elder, was born March 12, 1886 near Eddyville in Monroe County, Iowa. Her parents were both of pioneer Monroe County families.
She passed away at the age of 85 years on Wendesday, Feb. 16, 1972 at 7:10 p.m. at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Harbison in Keosauqua.
In 1909, she graduated from the Ottumwa Hospital School of Nursing and practiced her profession for much of her life until she was forced to retire because of ill health.
On January 15, 1913, she was married to John H. Babel and they lived near Estuary, Saskatchewan, Canada, until his death on May 7, 1915. She returned to Albia where she lived until moving to Keosauqua in 1949.
On September 16, 1934, she married W.E. Mitchem of Albia, who preceded her in death in May of 1944.
She was a member of the Keosauqua United Methodist Church and WSCS, the Van Buren County Chapter of DAR and a past member of Lynds Chapter Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving are one son, Dr. John S. Babel of Monterey Park, Calif.; her daughter, Jane Harbison of Keosauqua; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Neil Malcolm of Three Rivers, Mich.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Keosauqua with graveside services at 2 p.m. at Oak View Cemetery in Albia, Iowa. The Rev. James F. Ford officiated, and arrangements were made by the Catcott Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established payable to the United Methodist Church at Keosauqua.
