Betty Lawson Sherod Mitchell

Betty Lawson Sherod Mitchell, 79, of Bonaparte died at 10:50 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home of Keosauqua, with the Rev. Catie Newman officiating. Burial will be in Pittsburg Cemetery west of Keosauqua.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the family present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials to Van Buren County Hospital hospice room or nurses' lounge may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at No. 2, Vale View Circle, Bonaparte 52620.

Mrs. Mitchell was born March 13, 1924, in Keota, the daughter of Frank and Ethel Gumm Lawson. She married Jack Sherod Oct. 27, 1940. He died June 11, 1970. She married Ivan Mitchell April 12, 1974, in Farmington.

Mrs. Mitchell was employed at Barker Co Ltd. in Keosauqua for a number of years. Her pastimes included spending time with her children, bird watching, playing cards, cooking and helping others.

Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Jolly Housewives Club and State Line Saddle Club of Mount Sterling.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Sheila Hoaglin of Canton, Mo., Mary Ann Plemmons of Battletown, Ky., and Carol Mitchell Witte and husband Don of Winston-Salem, N. C.; four sons, Donald Mitchell and wife Phyllis, Matt Mitchell and wife Carol, all of Bonaparte, Mark Mitchell and wife Karen of Salem and Todd Mitchell and wife Brenda of Peosta; one sister Dorothy Moore of Fairfield; one brother Robert Lawson of Fairfield; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Besides her first husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Richard Sherod; one granddaughter; five sisters; and two brothers.
