One Dead In Auto Crash

PACKWOOD - A Richland man was killed Monday night when his car left the highway 1 1/2 miles south of Packwood, flipped over three times and came to a halt on its top in a farm field.

The victim is identified as Wendell Arthur Wiles, 25, Route 1, Richland. He was alone in the car when the accident took place occurred.

The accident took place at 7:25 p.m. on a curve at the Jay Cowguill farm.

Cowguill was outside his home and witnessed the crash. He said the car was traveling south and apparently missed the curve to the left and ran off the paving at the driveway to the Cowguill home.

The car flipped end over end at that point, jumped and crashed over two driveways, rolling a total of three times before coming to a halt in the field some distance from the county highway.

Cowguill said another car was passing by and stopped. The driver ran to the wrecked car and Cowguill said he ran to the house and notified the Highway Patrol and the Jefferson County Ambulance Service.

When he went to the scene there were others present and the driver was trapped under the wreckage. Finally a sufficient number of people arrived to lift the car and drag Wiles from underneath. He was taken by ambulance to the Jefferson County Hospital at Fairfield where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Since gasoline was leaking over the wreckage, the Packwood Fire Department was summoned as a precautionary measure.

The accident was investigated by a state trooper and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Wiles is the third victim to lose his life in a traffic accident in Jefferson County this year. An Ottumwa man was killed in a one-car accident west on Highway 34 April 18; and Paul Teeter, Jefferson County farmer, was fatally injured in a two-vehicle crash east of Fairfield on Highway 34 Sept. 10.

Services for Wiles will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Burch Funeral Home in Birmingham with the Rev. D. O. Van Dyne officiating. Burial will be in Iowaville Cemetery near Selma.

Wiles was born Oct. 13, 1951 at Ottumwa, the son of Arthur and Minnie Liles Wiles. He was married to Debra Hoffman April 30, 1972.

Surviving are his widow; one daughter, Michelle and one step-daughter, Dena Sue, both at home.

Other survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wiles, Libertyville; one brother, Victor Wiles, Libertyville; and three sisters: Mrs. Patricia Wiley, Keosauqua; Mrs. Carol Peebler, Winfield; and Mrs. Charlotte Keithley, Burlington.

Wiles was employed on the Tom Hoskins farm.
