OBITUARY

MISS JESSIE EVANS, youngest daughter of J. R. Evans, was born at Troy, Iowa, August 16, 1866, died April 13, 1890, aged 23 years, 7 months and 27 days.

She made a profession of religion and united with the Presbyterian church when she was 18 years of age, and immediately seemed to ask the question, “Lord what wilt thou have me to do?” Hence she was always at her place in the church and Sabbath school when her health and other circumstances permitted, and it was not long before she united with the Missionary Society, of which she remained an active member while she lived, and was for many years its treasurer. Her voice was often heard in praise and prayer at the prayer meeting. In a word, she understood that as a professing Christian she had something to do, and uncomplainingly bore her cross and was ready and will to perform any duty presented to her. And as was to be expected, during her illness and when the time came to die, there was exhibited the triumph of a living and growing faith in her Redeemer. The family and friends will never forget her counsels and prayers, nor her patience and resignation, nor less willingness to live or die, whatever was her Heavenly Father’s will. After appropriate services at the Presbyterian church on the evening of the Lord’s day, when it was nearing sunset, we laid her body away, but Jessie was not there, only the clay tabernacle. The saved and sanctified spirit had gone where the angels live, where the sainted mother and sister are at rest, and where they all behold the King in his glory.

“She hath escaped all danger now,
Her pain and conflicts are fled;
The crown of joy is on her brow,
Eternal glories o’er her shed.”

“In golden robes, a queen, a bride,
She standeth at her Sovereign’s side;
She sees His face unveiled and bright,
A lesser light amid His light”
JAMES WELCH.
