Man Fatally Injured in Fall

Nelton L. McCarty, 65, Selma, died Wednesday morning of injuries he suffered when he apparently fell from a stairway at the rear of the Parkside Tavern on the south side of the square.

Police were summoned about 8:40 a.m. Wednesday when it was reported a man was injured at the rear of the tavern. Officers said they found McCarty on the ground unconcious.

Officers said he fell about 12 or 14 feet to the ground from the stairway which leads to apartments on the second floor of the building. He was taken to the Jefferson County Hospital by ambulance where he died later in the morning.

A witness told officers McCarty had gone upstairs a short time before he was found unconscious on the ground.

The Jefferson County medical examiner ruled death was accidental and caused by internal injuries.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds with the Rev. L.C. Brown and the Rev. Helen Brown officiating. Interment will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery north of Douds.

Nelton L. McCarty was born May 29, 1911, in Williamstown, Mo., the son of James and Belle Allen McCarty. He spent his early life in Missouri and also lived a number of years in Santa Ana, Calif., where he was employed at the Orange County Hospital.

He retired in 1973 and moved to Iowa to make his home with his brother, E.E. McCarty, rural Selma. His wife, Esther, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Suzanne Greeson, Libertyville; two granddaughters; two brothers, Earl, Memphis, Mo., and E.I. McCarty, Selma; and a sister, Hallie Bates, Colorado Springs, Colo.
