Ethel Schwartz dies at 102

OSKALOOSA --- Ethel J. Schwartz, 102, of Oskaloosa, died Aug. 14, 1988 at the Mahaska Manor in Oskaloosa.

She was born Jan. 10, 1886 at Cedar Rapids, Neb., the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Elizabeth Moore. She came to Iowa at age 3, lived in Birmingham and joined the Methodist Church at an early age. She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church at Mt. Zion.

She graduated from Birmingham High School and taught for several years in Van Buren and Jefferson counties.

She married George Schwartz April 13, 1913. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church of Oskaloosa and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by one daughter Marguerite Johnston of Oskaloosa; two sons, Dale of Des Moines, and Alva of Williamsburg, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson, four brothers and three sisters.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Powers Funeral Home in Oskaloosa. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield with the Rev. David Holmes officiating.

Memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Church or Central United Methodist Church. Family visitation will be from 7-8:30 tonight at the Powers Funeral Home.

Note: Joseph’s surname was left out, it is “Wiley.” (Her father)
