BERT WELLBORN

Bert Richard Wellborn, 85, of Donnellson died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at his home.

Born Sept. 30, 1922, near Cantril, he was the son of S.E. "Tom" and Ferol Eggleston Wellborn. On March 23, 1946, he married Martha Van Steinburgh in Cantril.

Mr. Wellborn worked four years as a mechanic on road construction and for a trucking company, retiring in 1987. He was a mechanic and salesman at Dahms Chevrolet & Implement from 1947 to 1970, and he and his wife owned and operated Wellborn Implement for 14 years after that.

He was a 1939 graduate of Cantril High School. He served three years in the Army Engineers in Africa, England, France and the Philippines during World War II.

He was a member of the Donnellson Methodist Church, American Legion Gillespie Moody Post and George Washington Lodge. He also was a member of Artaban Chapter OES for more than 55 years, and served as commander, master and other office positions. He enjoyed baseball, camping, wood crafting and membership in the Southeast Iowa Gas Engine Club.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Carolyn Stewart of Bullhead City, Ariz.; one son, Richard Wellborn of Odessa, Texas; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Beryl Wellborn of Grinnell, Paul Wellborn of Plano, Texas, and Max Wellborn of Keosauqua; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation with family is 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory in Donnellson.

The memorial service for Mr. Wellborn will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Barb Krueger officiating. Burial with a flag presentation will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril.

A memorial has been established for Donnellson Fire and Rescue.
