William Bowles was born December 11, 1814, near London England, died Marce[sic] 1, 1896 from an attact[sic]of la grippe and other troubles, aged 81 years 2 months and 19 days. Mr. Bowles came to this country with his parents when a small boy, his parents settled at Water Town New York. Mr. Bowles came west and stoped[sic] on the Mississippi at New Madrid in the fall of 1836, then he came to Keokuk the following summer when that place had but a few inhabitance[sic], he settled near Farmington in the fall 1837, which he has since made his future home. He was married to Miss Mary H. Fasset, July 4, 1841. To this union was born six children, his wife and five children still survive him, the oldest daughter Mary Jenettie has preceded him to that better world. His wife and five children eight grand children and one great grand ceild[sic], and a host of friends grieve to mourn theis[sic] loss. The funeral occurred Tuesday at 2 o’clock at the Union chapel of Acasto. Rev. G.C. Goodenough preached a most elequant [sic] sermon to a very large audience gathered to pay their respect to the departed, and follow the remains to theit[sic] last resting place. Mr. Bowles was an honest and upright man and a good neighbor, and was universally respected for his many good qualities.

His voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
