Barbara Ellen Amos whose maiden name was Barbara Ellen Snider and who is familliarly[sic] known as grand-ma Amos departed this life Dec. 23rd 1895, of disease incident to old age and catarrhal affection of the stomach. She was born June 13th 1811 in Bedford, Bedford Co. Penn. where she was married to Joshua Amos. They moved to Virginia and remained for a time and then in 1954[sic] came to Farmington. In about a year Mr. Amos died and left her to care for a family of nine children. Three had previously died, two dying in infancy. The eldest son was drowned after he attained manhood. Four others have since died leaving four sons and one daughter – Mrs. Combs, with whom she of late had made her home. Her son Nathan resides at Carbon, N.Y., John, at Cincinnati, Io.,[sic], Philip, at Unionville, Mo., and Isaac, at Carbon, N.Y. Four of her sons fought under the stars and stripes through the rebellion evincing family patriotism. She was a member of the Lutheran church while in the east but never united with any church in Farmington. In the early years of her life at this place she had a hard struggle to mantain[sic] her family. Work was scarce and wages were meager but with energy and persistence she done whatever her hands found to do that would earn the means to sustain herself and family. Those who knew her in those times testify to her Christian fortitude, firm reliance, and faith and devotion to the right as she understood it. During the pioneer days, educational priveleges[sic] were not what they since have been but her zeal for the right and endeavors to do right bears evidence of a spirit of high order of natural intelligence. Few now would be able to contend as successfully against the same forces of discouragement, hardship and toil. Funer-[sic] service at the Christian church Dec., 25th 1895 at 10 a.m. Elder Jas. McKiernan delivered the sermon. Interment at Farmington cemetery.
