Man burns to death

DOUDS - Harold "Pete" Stump, 83, of rural Douds, suffered fatal burns in a flash fire Thursday morning at his farm home west of Douds.

The fire of undetermined origin occurred at 10:30 a.m. in the garage. Stump, who suffered third degree burns over his entire body, was admitted to Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua where he died at noon.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds with Dr. Chris Daniel officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery north of Douds. Visitation will be today at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials to the Cancer Fund may be left at the funeral home.

Stump was born Aug. 20, 1897 near Libertyville, the son of Elmer and Emma Carl Stump. On Nov. 21, 1917 he married Esther Ferrel at Ottumwa. They lived most of their married life in the Douds community.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Stanley Loomis of Fairfield and Mrs. Carl Doud of Ottumwa; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Orrin Cobler of Ottumwa.

In addition to farming, Stump was employed many years by the Van Buren County Highway Department. Following his retirement from the county, he worked part time at Barker Mercantile in Douds.
