Howard Schafer

Howard L. Schafer, 79, of Milton, died February 20, 2004, at home.

He was born September 1, 1924, near Brighton, to Dale and Florence Schafer. He married Elizabeth M. Jacobs on November 23, 1947, near Fairfield. She preceded him in death January 24, 1997.

He farmed near Olds and Fairfield and lived the past 32 years in Milton. He had worked for De Voss Farms and was a truck driver for Mid-States Equipment Company in Milton.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Lee Messer of Bloomfield and Linda Kay Moore of Ottumwa; four sons, Elmer J. Schafer of Orlando, Florida, Leo D. Schafer of Fairfield, Arthur L. Schafer of Wayland and Howard L. Schafer Jr., of Ottumwa; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Schafer of Milton; and a sister, Jean Simmons of Sandwich, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Esteline Rundquist; a brother, Dean Schafer; an infant son, an infant daughter; and a grandson.
