Gertrude M. Dille, 92, of Birmingham died at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 1999, at the Jefferson County Hospital Long-Term Care Unit where she had resided for the past seven years.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Birmingham Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Kennedy and Rev. Harold Schnedler officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Birmingham. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. at Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham. Memorials have been established to Birmingham Presbyterian Church and to the Birmingham Public Library.
Mrs. Dille was born July 9, 1906, near Mount Zion, south of Birmingham, the daughter of Samuel and Rosena Sherod Topping. She married Clyde A. Dille April 27, 1926, at the Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. He died in August 1983.
She was a lifetime member of the Winchester and Birmingham community. She attended Birmingham High School and Parsons College. She taught for several years in rural schools near Birmingham before her marriage.
She and her husband owned and operated Farmers Store in Birmingham for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Birmingham Presbyterian Church and was pianist at the church for many years. She gardened, cooked, kept house and made quilts for her children and grandchildren. She belonged to several bridge clubs.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Dille of Birmingham and Lloyde Dille of East Hampton, N.Y.; one daughter, Bette Countryman of Birmingham; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, John Topping.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant grandson; three sisters, Mildred Topping and two infants; and one brother Clem Topping.
