Charles F. Corns

Charles F., son of Ira M. and Sarah Corns was born at Taylorsville, Ohio, April 15, 1847, and passed away in the arms of his devoted wife following the noonday meal, while seated at the table, Friday June 6, 1924, aged 77 years, 1 month and 21 days.

Mr. Corns had been in declining health for several years, but had assisted with some outdoor work that morning and complained of being very tired. The summons was very unexpected and a great shock to his wife and the entire community. Mr. Corns came with his parents to Bentonsport, Iowa, in 1855 when a mere lad of 8 years and the friendships formed in childhood have continued through life.

He was united in marriage with Miss Hattie R. Scott, April 4, 1878. Together they built a home on a knoll overlooking the town, Mrs. Corns sharing in the labor of love and joy of possession. It was a home where peace and harmony existed and has so continued throughout 46 years of happy companionship. Their home being childless, they lavished all the affection of their hearts upon their nieces, nephews and their little ones. The open door to their home and hearts was reciprocated and visits to “Aunt Hattie and Uncle Charles” were of keenest enjoyment to all.

Mrs. Corns was a member of Bentonsport I.O.O.F. and has always stood for the principles of Odd Fellowship, enjoying to the fullest extent the ties of brotherhood. He was a faithful attendant until failing health prevented. He was a devoted husband, a kindly neighbor, a useful citizen, and will be greatly by the entire community.

Those who survive and mourn, with the bereaved wife are his brothers, Rufus of Farmington, Frank of South Dakota, and Martin and Alonzo with his sister, Mrs. Frank Musser of Bentonsport, and Mrs. Walter Baker of Ottumwa, Iowa; nephews, nieces and innumerable friends.

Funeral services were held at the late home on Sunday afternoon, Rev. George Morris officiating. Interment in the Bentonsport cemetery.
