Man Killed In Crash With School Bus

ANKENY, Iowa -- When crews responded to a school bus crash in northern Polk County on Monday afternoon they said Robert BLACK, Jr., of Huxley, was already dead. His daughter, Katherine BLACK, 21, was a passenger in the truck. She was not injured.

The crash happened around 3:50 p.m. near 13800 NE 14th St., just south of the town of Alleman. BLACK's pick-up truck and the school bus crashed head-on, officials said. The school bus driver told deputies that Black was slowly drifting into the bus' lane and he couldn't avoid the crash.

The school bus was carrying 48 students from North Polk and Alleman schools.

Rescue crews said none of the students was seriously injured, but two were taken to local hospitals. "It just seems to be bumps and bruises," said Ankeny Fire Chief Rex Mundt.

The students were taken to Ankeny's main fire station to be checked out. Paramedics set up a triage in one of the department's conference rooms. Parents were called to pick up their children and had to show identification.
Andrea Fisher had five children on board the bus. "My fifteen-year-old son called and said the bus had been in an accident," Fisher said. "While we were crashing I just flew into the aisle. Then I got up and looked out the window and there was rubber all over," her son said after leaving the fire station.

All four tires came off the bus in the crash. There wasn't much left of Black's truck.

The school bus driver complained of chest pains and was taken to the hospital, but is now said to be doing okay. "He's a really, really good bus driver and the kids love him and he loves the kids. So we hope he's okay. We are praying for him," said Fisher.
