She came with her parents to Van Buren county, Iowa, in the spring of 1864 on February 8, 1872 she united in marriage to Alonzo Cox, who died July 4, 1916. To this union eleven children were born, William Harvey, who died June 28, 1876, age 10 months and 20 days; Edward Walter who was killed in a sawmill accident April 30, 1904 aged 30 years, 1 month and 4 days. The living children are: Rena Sechrist, Pueblo, Colo.; Ray Cox, Teusa Bloockburn, Elva Bartholomew, of Keosauqua, Ada David, Kansas City, Mo.; Sada Magorian, Cantril; Carrie Murphy, Milton; Orin, Stockport and Chloe Cox of Keosauqua. She is also survived by 36 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. The living brothers and sisters are John Hales, Mt. Sterling; Thos. Hales, Witchita, Kansas; Mrs. Josie Eller, Harvard, Nebr.; Mrs. Lizzie Burton, Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister Mrs. Sarah Peterson of Aberdeen, S.D. passed away May 4th just 12 days before her sister Mary. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Cox has made her home with her children. On Sept. 6, 1922, she left here for Pueblo, Colo., where she visited her daughter Rena, but took sick the last week in December, and her youngest daughter Carrie, made the trip to Colorado, and accompanied her to her home near Milton, where she has been until three weeks ago when she came to the home of her son Ray to be near her family doctor and passed peacefully away at 5:30 p.m., May 16, 1923.
Mrs. Cox was a woman of many fine qualities, always striving to make the world more pleasant for those with whom she came in contact. A word of cheer for all, and a disposition lovable for its simplicity. She died in the Christian faith which was amply demonstrated in her daily life. The vacancy created in this family by her departure is a sad one indeed and the many friends of the family have shown their sympathy by abundant acts of kindness in the hour of their bereavement. Funeral services were held at Methodist church in Keosauqua, by Rev. Caughlin, assisted by Rev. Campbell, Friday afternoon, May 18, and burial at Center Chapel, where the husband and two children were laid to rest.
We have lost our darling mother
She has bid us all adieu; She has gone to live in heaven
And her form is lost to viewOh! That dear one, how we loved her
Oh, how hard to give her upBut an angel came down for her
And removed her from our flock. We desire to thank the many friends for their acts of kindness and sympathy during the illness and death of our mother and grandmother.
