Death of a centenarian
Died, at the residence of his son, Francis Miller, in Chequest township, on the 15th inst., at 9:30 o'clock, Daniel Miller, aged 102 years and 8 months.
Grand-pa Miller was born in Pa., on the 15th of July, 1785, and moved with his parents to Breckenridge Co., Ky., when a boy, and from there to Perry Co., Ind., and from Ind. to Van Buren Co., where he was one of the earliest settlers, having came here before the land west of Van Buren Co., was purchased from the Indians; and it seemed like a romance to hear him tell of hunting deer and bears where now we only see the splendid farms and sleek herds of our citizens, and "iron hoofs have so beaten down the war path that an eagle's eye cannot discover an Indian track." He was twice married, and raised a family of five boys and five girls, six of whom are still living. Two sons John and Adam, and two daughters, Mrs. Sully Collins and Elizabeth Miller, are waiting to meet him "on the other shore." Of those living, Abraham lives in Davis Co.; also Mrs. Nancy Lanman and Mrs. Polly Roland, Francis in Van Buren Co., Mrs. Lottie Sconce in Texas, and Daniel in Ills. He leaves 71 grandchildren, 155 great grand children, and 3 great-great grand children,. His kind and genial nature endeared him to all who knew him, and his simple, child-like trust in the goodness and mercy of God was a full assurance that he is among the blessed. His remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of mourning relatives and sympathizing friends.
