Abraham L. Coffman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Coffman, was born May 4, 1834 in Putnam county, Indiana, died at his home near Lebanon, Iowa, June 14, 1912, making him 78 years, 1 month and 10 days old. He came to Marion county, Iowa, in the year 1857, and from there to Van Buren county in 1866, where he has since resided. He was married in 1860 to Gilly Ann Thompson and to them were born two children, Josephine and Eugene, the latter dying when quite small, Josephine dying after reaching young womanhood. Mr. Coffman was in the War of the Rebellion from 1861 to 1865. In 1866 he was again united in marriage to Martha Roush and to them were born nine children: Ira, Margaret Ellen, Mahala Jane, Anna, Elmer, Grace, Omer, Eva and Walter. The wife and mother passed away Feb. 15, 1899; Eva died Feb. 9, 1904; Margaret Ellen died June 6, 1909; Anna and Walter died in infancy. There are five children living, ten grand-children and three brothers. The brothers are D. H. Coffman of Hamilton, Illinois; Joseph Coffman, of Missouri; Isaac Coffman, of Wyoming. The deceased united with the Baptist Church some 40 years ago but transferred his membership to the M. E. church at Lebanon, Iowa, about 12 years ago, of which he has been a member ever since.
