MARY E. SWANK

Mary E. Swank, the daughter of John and Marie Saar, was born November 3, 1864, in Lee county, Iowa, and died September 9, at the home of her son, G.E. Smith in Memphis, Mo. She was 85 years, 10 months and six days of age.

Miss Mary E. Saar was united in marriage to Harvey Dodge Smith, April 22, 1886. Three children were born, the first dying in infancy. Mr. Smith died May 5, 1894.

Mary E. Smith and Lee Swank were united in marriage June 1 1898, and lived together nearly 50 years, when Mr. Swank died February 15, 1948.

Mrs. Swank is survived by her twin sons, Gerald E. Smith of Des Moines, and Harold D. Smith of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Madeline Smith of Shenandoah, and Donald Smith of Des Moines; two great-granddaughters, Sherry and Linda Smith of Des Moines.

Mary E. Saar was one of eight children, and is survived by two sisters. Mrs. Kate Casaday of Cantril, and Mrs. Emma Delaney, Montrose, colo. Her step-children surviving are: Ray Swank, memphis, Mo., and Mrs. George Abernathy, Milton.

Mother Swank was a member of the Methodist church in Cantril, and taught the Rose bud Sunday school class for over 50 years.

Funeral services were held in the Cantril Methodist church on September 11, in charge of Rev. J.W. Darlington, pastor, and Rev. W.E. Longstreth, of Memphis. burial was made in the cantril cemetery.
