MARY SUSAN BURNS

Mary Susan Landess, daughter of John and Sarah Landess, was born July 11, 1850, in Highland county, Ohio, and departed this life May 5, 1923, at the age of 72 years and 10 months. She moved with her parents to Iowa in the fall of 1868. She was united in marriage to Robert W. Burns March 26, 1871. They went to housekeeping on a farm six miles south of Keosauqua and Mrs. Burns lived there 48 years until November, 1919, when she moved to Keosauqua.

To this union were born five children: Cora and Arthur, who died when a year old; Frank, who lives on a farm south of Keosauqua; Mrs. W. H. Beatty of Cantril, and Charles, who lived with the mother and kept the home together since the death of his father May 5, 1910, just thirteen years before the death of the mother.

She also leaves 4 granddaughters, 3 sisters: Mrs. M. E. Colvin, of Leando, Iowa; Mrs. W. D. Davenport and Mrs. M. A. Morse of Walter, Oklahoma; and 2 brothers, Charles Landess of Cantril, and Cyrus Landess of Stockport. Three sisters and one brother have preceded her in death.

She united with the Christian church in Ohio during her girlhood days, but when she moved to Iowa the Home Prairie M. E. church was near her home, so she united with that church of which she remained a member until death.

On Feb. 22, 1923, she was taken ill and seemed to be improving until April 22, she was stricken with paralysis. She loved her home dearly and during her illness she expressed herself as being ready to go if she could not do her home duties. Everything that human hands could do was done but life ebbed slowly away until Saturday evening when her spirit took its flight to that mansion prepared for us.

Funeral services, in charge of Rev. J. C. Caughlan, were held at the home Monday afternoon, May 7, at 2 o'clock. Burial was at the Prall cemetery beside her husband.
