JOHN E. COOKSEY
John Elbert Cooksey was born in Rush township, Champaign county, Ohio, April 19, 1838 and departed this life at ten minutes of two o'clock on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 13, 1912 at the home in this city, at the ripe old age of 73 years, 10 months and 13 days.
He never had good health, being a great sufferer from heart and kidney troudle [sic] and other complications, but nevertheless he answered his country's call and joined the army. He enlisted December 14, 1862 in Co. H, 66th Ohio regiment, Volunteer Infantry at Urbana and served till July 15, 1865, when he received an honorable discharge at Louisville, Ky. He was one of those brave soldiers that was with Sherman on his march to the sea.
How he loved his country, his comrades, his friends, his home and family and his God in whom he was a firm believer. How he loved his Bible and spent a great deal of time in reading it.
He was a member of the church in his youthful days and again joining the M. E. church at Keosauqua under the pastorate of Rev. Thorne.
He came to Iowa and Van Buren County in May 1867, and on the 29th of August of that same year was united in marriage to Miss Samantha A. Dunlap of near Lebanon. This union was blessed by the birth of four children, Dan of Pittsburg, Iowa, Amy V. Shelton of Pittsburg, Pa., Hettie Carpenter of Cantril and Will of Keosauqua.
