I. H. STRAIT

Israel Hitchcock Strait, son of Samuel and Cordelia Hitchcock Strait, was born near Rehoboth, Perry county, Ohio, Jan. 31, 1855, and passed to his reward the evening of Dec. 11, 1928, being at the time of his death 73 years, 10 months and 11 days of age.

In the spring of 1877 he came with his parents to Van Buren county, settling near Douds and on April 3, 1879, he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane Plowman.

After one year's resident near the parental home they moved to the present home near Pittsburg where they have resided for over 48 years.

This union was blessed with six sons and five daughters, all of whom were at his bedside during his last hours except Mertie Jane who passed away in childhood.

He is survived by his wife and ten children: Garfield L., Mrs. Orville Burkett, Roscoe E., Clarence W., Edward P., Mrs. Gus Crane, Mrs. Milo De Long, Marguerite, Bruce [T.?], Wilbur V., and seven grandchildren, and one brother, Warren Bing, all residing near Keosauqua, except Mrs. De Long and son of West Chester, Iowa.

Additional Info: I have been told he is buried in Pittsburg Cemetery, Van Buren County, Iowa. Wife Sarah Jane Plowman Strait born 13 Sep 1860 died 20 May 1940 and is buried beside him. Clarification on children: Mrs. Orville Burkett is Blanche Hester, Mrs. Gus Crane is Lena Adelaide Delilah and Mrs. Milo DeLong is Mertie Mae. Daughter Mertie Jane Strait born 22 Feb 1889 died 22 Dec 1893.
