AGED KEOKUK COUPLE BURNED IN THEIR HOME
Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Baker, two of Keokuk's most prominent people of the older generation, lost their lives when their large home was damaged by fire early Monday morning.
Mr. and Mrs. Baker were alone in the house, except for servants in distant quarters. The fire was discovered about 4 a. m. and by the time rescuers reached the aged couple they had been asphixiated [sic] by the smoke. How the fire started has not been learned, or the exact extent of it.
Mr. Baker was one of Keokuk's wealthiest citizens, and the father of E. Ross Baker, whose wife is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Meek of Bonaparte. The Bakers are well known to many Bonaparte and Van Buren county people who will learn with sincere regret of the tragic termination of the lives of these people.
