HENRY H. SMITH
Henry H. Smith was born in Pennsylvania, Feb. 15, 1837, and died at his home in Cantril, May 18, 1930, aged 93 years, 3 months and 3 days.
Mr. Smith came to Iowa with his parents in the spring of 1842, settling in Lee county near the present site of Pilot Grove. He was the youngest of a family of seven children, all of whom have preceded him in death. He served during the Civil War in Co. G, 3rd Iowa Cavalry, and was honorably discharged August 9, 1865, at Atlanta, Georgia.
August 9, 1869, he was united in marriage to Minerva Wright. To this union eight children were born, three of whom are living--Ed and Mollie at home and Mrs. Nellie Stone, of Taylor, Nebr., who with several grandchildren are left to mourn his departure. His companion preceded him in death on March 24, 1896.
He confessed Christ as his Savior and united with the Cantril Christian church in 1893, under the pastorate of P. D. Holloway, and was always a consistent and faithful member.
He was a charter member of K. P. lodge No. 235. He spent the greater part of his life in and near Cantril. The death of "Uncle Henry," as he was commonly called, marks the passing of one of the few remaining Civil War veterans.
Funeral services were held at the Cantril Christian church, Monday, March 19, at 2 p. m., Elder H. C. Shaw officiating, assisted by a mixed quartet, composed of Mrs. Nola Augspurger, Miss Cleda Wellborn, Junior Wellborn and John Van Fleet, accompanied by Mrs. H. C. Shaw at the piano.
His brethren of the K. P. lodge attended the service in a body. Burial in South Prairie Chapel cemetery, south of Milton.
