OBITUARY.
MRS. NANCY WINSLOW MASON died of Typhoid Pneumonia, on Friday morning the 28th ult., at the residence of her son James L. Mason.
The deceased was born the 25th of December, 1808, in New Berlin, Chenango county, New York. She united in marriage with Lewis J. Mason on the 27th of December, 1829. Shortly after their marriage they united with the Prot. Episcopal Church. In the year 1858 they came with their family to Bentonsport, Iowa, where they united with the Congregational Church. There, on the 28th of September, 1867, the husband and father died. The wife and mother kept her family together until the two daughters and six sons had families and homes of their own, where the dear mother was ever a welcome and much honored guest. It was during one of these annual visits to her son James that she was taken sick, and after a brief week’s suffering she was released from earth and welcomed to heaven. She came here about four weeks before her death, expecting the additional pleasure and satisfaction of meeting her sister, Mrs. Mum – the mother of Mrs. Leo Davis – whom she has not met for twenty-years. This special favor was granted her. These beloved sisters and mothers and grandmothers, enjoyed each others society and the society of their generations for nearly three weeks.
But all this delight was suddenly interrupted and ended by the prostrating illness of the elder sister.
The disease, though not alarming at the first, made steady and sure progress to the fatal end. Her dear children were summoned from their several homes. They came, but not in time to see their mother and receive her parting blessing. During her sickness her mind was calm, and, for the most part, clear. She was sweetly resigned, and so patient. Not a murmur escaped her lips.
The Saviour, in whom she had trusted for fifty years, did not leave or forsake her in this hour of trial. He, the true and faithful Comforter, was still her stay and support in and through the dark valley of dying. She retained her mind clear to the last, and died sweetly and peaceful as an infant sleeps on the mother’s breast. In the early morn, just when she would rather be up and away at her Masters bidding, she bid the farewell to earth, and the All Hail to the glorified in heaven.
Her request to be buried by her husband, was complied with. Her children and sisters, accompanied by a few friends and their Pastor, in due time arrived at the depot in Bentonsport, where gathered a large company of sympathizing friends.
The funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 o’clock, in the Presbyterian church. The citizens testified their respect both to the deceased and to the living by their presence and their kind attention in these last sad sacred rites.
