Florence C. Mellen was born May 25, 1998 at Bentonsporte, Iowa, the daughter of John Hervey and Grace Sell Hervey, and passed away Thursday, June 12, 1997 at the age of 89 years. She received her schooling in Iowa. On June 26, 1927, she was united in marriage to Elmer Mellen at Bonaparte, Iowa. They made their home in Iowa until 1938 when they moved to Missouri. Two children were born to this marriage.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gray Summit and had been very active in the Senior Adult Group and taught Sunday School for many years. Florence enjoyed her grandchildren and loved to sew for them.
She is survived by her husband Elmer of Gray Summit; one son, Bruce Mellen and wife Betty of Washington, Mo.; and one daughter, Delores Strange of Columbia, Mo; thirteen grandchildren, thirty seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Verda Duke of Gallatin, Mo; Valara Koonts of Ottumwa, Iowa and Wanda Kirkland of Seattle, Wa; other relatives and many friends. She was preceeded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lucille Hervey and Gladys Beggs, and two brothers, Willard and Robert Hervey. Also a son-in-law, Walter Strange.
Funeral services were held June 15, 1997 at the First Baptist Church of Gray Summit, Rev. James R. Perdew officiating. Interment was in Midlawn Cemetery, Union, Mo.
