Gabriel Schlotter was born in Vitzenburg, Germany, June 17, 1830, and died at his home near Selma, Iowa, October 2, 1913, at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 15 days. He came to New York at the age of 13 years and from there he went to Wheeling, West Virginia, coming to Iowa in 1851, where he has since made his home with the exception of about two years when he resided in Missouri.

He was married to Elizabeth Hemm, January 23, 1859. To this union were born six children, three sons, Jacob, of near Selma, and Joseph and William of near Floris, and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Munn, of Gerda Srings, Kansas, Mrs. Mary Lommis and Mrs. Anna Ploss, of near Douds-Leando, Iowa, all of whom were present at the funeral. He is also survived by twelve grand children and three great-grandchildren and one brother, Lewis Schlotter, of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Mr. Schlotter had been a great sufferer from cancer for about three years, but bore his suffering patiently, and all that medical skill and lovings hands could do was done for him, but to no avail he passed peacefully away with a testimony of assurance that all was well, to a home in the great beyond, where parting will be no more. His only regret was in leaving his aged and afflicted companion who is almost helpless.

Mr. and Mrs. Schlotter celebrated their golden wedding January 23, 1909 where the children and grand children met as one happy family. They have been greatly blessed, as this has been the first death in the family in almost fifty-five years of married life.

The funeral services were conducted Friday, October 3, at 10 o'clock, at the house of Rev. William Heger. The pall bearers were six grandsons, Russell and Glenn Schlotter, of Selma; James Schlotter, of Eldon; Robert Schlotter, of near Floris; Vessie Hinkle and Roy Munn of near Belnap. There was a large concourse of friends followed the remains to their last resting place. Interment was made in the Iowaville Cemetery.
