S. Scott Troutman

Stephen Scott Troutman, well known southeastern Iowa merchant, died about seven o'clock Tuesday morning at his home in Bonaparte at the age of 78, after an illness of several months. Funeral services are to be held at the late home on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. L. E. Winfrey officiating.

Mr. Troutman was a son of George W. and Cynthia Ann Scott Troutman and was born Dec. 20, 1860, on a farm north of Bonaparte.

He was united in marriage with Miss Minnie Hinish Dec. 29, 1881, and they started housekeeping in a three room house on site of and part of the present home in Bonaparte.

Surviving members of his immediate family are two daughters, Mrs. Clare Beard of Bonaparte, who has made her home with her father for about two years, since the death of her mother, and Mrs. Georgiana Smith of Keokuk; three sons, Joseph S., James E. and Frank M. of Bonaparte. There are 21 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Clara Morris of Eldon.

Mrs. Troutman preceded her husband in death on May 21, 1937. A daughter, Mrs. Dolores Crooks, passed away on March 24, 1925.

Mr. Troutman spent most of his life in Bonaparte and vicinity, always an industrious, trustworthy citizen. He has been engaged in farming, merchandising and was also a contractor and builder. As a partner of the late John Young he built the stone wall around Sharon cemetery, also foundation for Presbyterian church and other buildings.

About the time of the world war he operated what is known as the Ferguson farm near Mt. Sterling. Returning to Bonaparte he engaged in the hardware business and was so employed when he became fatally ill.

While a young man he united with the Methodist church and the Odd Fellows lodge of Bonaparte.

Bonaparte stores will be closed Thursday afternoon during the funeral services.
